The world is full of half-told stories.
In the Old Testament, fascinating people and lands were mentioned once and then never again. Scientists say that we’ll never know what existed before the Big Bang. And half of the written record of Dr John Dee’s conversations with angels have been lost forever.
Locus is the comic that fills in all those blanks.
Visually, it’s a strange mishmash of all the comics and movies I wasted my youth upon. Heavy Metal Magazine from the late 70s and early 80s. The Ditko-era Doctor Strange. EC reprints. Savage Sword of Conan. And pretty much every horror movie from the 70s and 80s, regardless of budget.
Story-wise, it’s got a lot of monsters and horror elements, but is more tense than scary. Despite the “Boobs, Blood and Bad Language™” tagline, Locus has a large and loyal following of lady readers.
Issues 1-3 comprise the first story, “No Other Choice”, in which Locus and her Uncle Spook tear ass through the Southwestern US, looking for her father’s killers. This was supposed to be the only Locus story, but the readers wanted more.
Issues 4-8 tell the second story, “Unveiled”. This takes place about 20 years earlier and tells the story of how Locus’ mom and dad meet. We also get to meet Hampstead and Xel’Duum.
Issues 9-20 tell the third story, “Fate’s a Bitch”, in which Locus decides to find her grandfather. She finds a lot more than that!
All are online and free to read. Click here for the Archives, which is the best place to start.
Thanks for stopping by! I hope you dig the comic.
